Psychological Safety Starts With You

A team six months into a new leader. Restructuring has just happened. The team is in fight or flight — wondering what's coming next, bubbling with concerns, but not saying any of it directly to the leader. From the outside the team looks fine. From the inside everyone is holding their breath.

I’m preparing for the next team session, the one where we’re kicking off with Lencioni’s Five Dysfunctions of a Team (5 layers starting with Trust, Conflict, Commitment, Accountability, and Results) and working on establishing vulnerability-based trust with the Enneagram. After learning about the team’s concerns, I see a need to establish psychological safety first before anything I have planned for after can land. I share my plan with the leader and request that he give me 30 minutes with the team before he arrives.
